MISSION

WAVE (Wellness Ambassadors to Voice and Empower) uses an approach of positive youth development, youth-driven leadership, and positive peer support to promote resiliency and protective factors while preventing substance use, bullying, suicide, and gun violence among Santa Fe County youth.

HISTORY

Though WAVE has been known by multiple names and focused on a variety of wellness topics, the program has continuously been run through the Office of Student Wellness at the  Santa Fe Public School District.

The WAVE Program began in 2000 under the name SQUADS with an original mission of smoking cessation and prevention. The program’s name was changed to SWAT (Student Wellness Action Teams) in 2005. In 2018, the program was renamed WAVE (Wellness Ambassadors to Voice and Empower).

Over the years, the program has evolved beyond its original focus, to work on prevention of a variety of topics including substance use, suicide, bullying, and, (most recently) vaping and gun violence. WAVE has experienced these shifts due in major part to its commitment to student leadership. As such, each year the program’s focus is dependent on the passions and interests of the current program’s members, and often vary slightly between school sites.
